IX Podcast 12: Blasé

This week we add a little more vibes from France to the mix. Born in Paris, raised in New York City, and currently residing in Montreal, 19 year old artist known as Blasé has gathered influences from across the globe to put together the 12th edition of our Podcast series just for you.

Even though he is still under the radar, don’t let that make you underestimate his talented craft as a Producer and DJ. This kid has a lot coming for him, and if it wasn’t for one his side-projects, namely the House/Techno production he does under his alias ROMBO, we wouldn’t have discovered him. Some of his major influences come from a lot of french producers namely Onra, Mr. Carmack and Kaytranada, so you can definitely imagine the style of music he prefers to mix under Blasé. His latest LP, soon to be dropped, features a number of up-and=coming figures from the Montreal and New York Hip Hop scenes such as Gabe Nandez, ST, Osti One, Loan Delice, Prime and others.

This 40 min-set takes us through a great selection of tracks that he calls ‘his favourites’, as well as some unreleased gems that you get to hear first. When we asked him to take us through the process of putting together this mix, here’s what he had to say:
It’s basically a selection of my favourite tracks I heard this past year, and some remixes and unreleased stuff I’ve been working on. The thing is these tracks are all over the place tempo-wise. I guess I tried to make it smooth so the mix is continuously accelerating without being too noticeable. It goes from 108 BPM to 180 (which can also be 90). It almost goes full-circle.

We got the chance to ask Blasé a couple of questions to get more insight on who he is (below). The 12th edition of the IX Podcast is now available via iTunesSoundcloud and Mixcloud. Do not sleep on this one. Tracklist after the jump!

IX: Who is Blasé?
I don’t know. Blasé is 2 year old baby who makes beats. He likes to DJ sometimes too.

IX: When did you start making music?
I started playing saxophone when I was 9. I’ve worked on a bunch of projects since. I used to be in a band called Howl in high school. I also started making techno and house as ROMBO in 2011. Blasé started in 2012.

IX: Did you have any musical background before getting into producing?
I’d been trying a lot of things. I started playing the saxophone when I was 9. I took classes for 4 years and moved on to teaching myself guitar because I thought it was cooler. I played in a band in high school. I also started playing with garageband on my dad’s computer when I was 12, and quickly became hooked. Thats when I started producing. I kind of continued playing guitar at the same time for a while but then I just dedicated myself 100% to producing.
IX: What artists have had an influence on your music?
Mr. Oizo, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Pink Floyd, Mr. Carmack, Justice, Flying Lotus, Air, James Blake.
IX: What are the type of people that you imagine listen to your music?
Goths and lawyers.

IX: What is the big plan for the next year?
The big plan right now actually is the release the second installment of my Bad Wake Up series, BWUVOLII (Bad Wake Up Vol. II). It’s done and should be released this month. Its features a bunch of talented rappers from Montreal and New York and I’m really glad with how it came out. . You can hear some of it in the mix 😉 So I guess the plan for the next year is to make sure that project gets heard. I also have a couple of cool collaborations coming up! Finally, I’m working on a really exciting project with a Montreal singer that I’ve been making music with. We are putting together a duo called HAUTE and will be releasing material pretty soon. That’s all I can say for now!
