When a steak is handed to you on a silver platter, for free, you do not ignore it. You devour it.
If you own a TV and cared to watch the AMAs last night, you probably got a glimpse into the state of popular American music today. Whether it be good or bad, that’s for you to decide. What mostly caught my interest was the category for Best New Artist: Bastille vs. Lorde vs. Imagine Dragons vs. Iggy Azalea vs. Sam Smith (my choice). Ultimately, it went to Imagine Dragons.
On that note, I thought it was time to share some names catching wind in underground/blog/alternative/hipster/Soundcloud/whateveryouwannacallit scene:
Based out of London, this duo produces some of the best smooth sultry electro indie synth pop east of the Atlantic Ocean. Their tracks throwback to the best of the 80s – melodically and, to a certain extent, lyrically. They’re like the modern-day Spandau Ballet, just more upbeat but with equal sentiment.
This producer based out of Seattle caught the eye of Ryan Hemsworth pretty early on and it’s not hard to see why. His ability to combine and manipulate simple, almost miscellaneous, sounds and beats into flowingly beautiful melodies is no small feat.
When a steak is handed to you on a silver platter, for free, you do not ignore it. You devour it. The Stand4rd, composed of Spooky Black, Allan Kingdom, Bobby Raps, and Psymun, just put up some prime triple A Hip Hop steak in the market and it’s hard to ignore. Largely laidback with a touch of eccentricity, thestand4rd (album) is the quintessential alternative Hip Hop in today’s vast landscape of music.
