Watch the Trailer for Fox’s New Hip Hop Family Empire

For those who still deny that television has become the superior storytelling medium, the current slate of scripted dramas is sure to change your mind.  Empire is Fox’s highest rated show in years.  The hip-hop drama tracks one family as it joins them in the present, but with frequent flashbacks to 20 years ago. The show stars acclaimed actor Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow) as hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon, as well as TV veteran Taraji P. Henson, as his former partner, and current nemesis, Cookie Lyon.  Cookie’s story will be one of redemption, as she seeks to take back control over the company after getting out of jail.  Lee Daniels, who was behind last year’s The Butler, is the Executive Producer of Empire.  Story-wise, all of the necessary elements are there – secrets, hidden motives, and of course, the sense that not everyone will make it out the other side.

Empire - Cookie's Coming Home

Family dramas can be tricky at best, but Empire walks the line well.  The familiar family structure paired with the shiny, glamorous world of American hip hop is modern, relevant, and intriguing.  It’ll be exciting to follow the show, and see if the strong premiere and fantastic cast make it a hit, with some longevity.  But with Timbaland as the show’s Music Producer, how could they go wrong?

You can check out a trailer for Empire below.

The next episode of Empire airs on Wed, January 14th at 9:00p.m.
