The best tool Sia, the singer-songwriter behind “Chandelier“, has is Maddie Ziegler, the 12-year-old dancer you see in every single music video, or performance Sia has made to promote her sixth album, 1000 Forms of Fear. After appearing in the Drop Dead Diva TV series, Maddie was recruited by Sia to be a part of her clips. We first saw Maddie in Sia’s breathtaking video for the “Chandelier” single, and when the clip for “Elastic Heart” was dropped, we concluded that Maddie would stay for a while. For “Elastic Heart,” also starring the Transformers actor, Shia LeBeouf, Sia created a sequel to “Chandelier,” and now with “Big Girls Cry,” the sequel has turned into a trilogy.
This time around, the video is pretty simple: just a black background and Maddie, the center of the attention. We thus tend to focus on her, her facial expressions, and mouvements. They all express what it feels for a big girl to cry, but restrains herself to do so. They perfectly reflect the lyrics as well, and you can tell it’s autobiographic, which is interesting because Sia distances herself from fame, and doesn’t give interviews. So the fact that she can talk about her life without having to explain it later on makes her artworks, especially this clip, very powerful.
