In the last year, Toronto group TV SETS went from a two piece to three piece after meeting their newest member at a bar who just happened to have some ideas for the band. After some collaborating and experimenting with different sounds, homemade percussion, and even spending a few nights tracking vocals in an underground parking garage in Parkdale, the trio released their third EP, These Rifle Years.
What a year and some restless nights spent recording can do because These Rifle Years sounds like an entirely different band, and a more polished one. Chugging dreamy guitars take flight along the catchy and romantic Try. The experimental sounds made in that parking garage come to life on the pensive and downtempo In Wait as they sing, "I'll move right in, darkest before the dawn, but what if they're wrong and it all just goes on and on." Sea Legs finds the trio ramping up the shoegaze in a cascade of reverb and energy, and closes out with the subdued Terminal Certainty as your mind trails off to the spiraling guitar and synths.
Lo fi bedroom pop has never sounded better than These Rifle Years, and you can catch TV SETS perform these songs and more, next month. Stream the album below and check out the karaoke nightmare inspired video directed by Jessica Mae for the title track.
