KROY has quickly risen to the top of the best new acts to discover from Montreal.
With her debut album Scavenger, currently available on all digital platforms, the sky is the limit for the emerging Alternative artist. The 9-track project ecompasses her sultry voice layered on top of meticulously produced electronic music that will dig deep into your soul and bring out emotions you never thought you've had before.
KROY will be performing at this year's M for Montreal festival, specifically on November 18th at Newspeak alongside FJORD and Ghostly Kisses, and it's free.
We did a little Q&A with the artist hoping to get some more insight on her entire persona as KROY and she delivered. Scroll through the whole thing after the jump.
How would you describe KROY in under 140 characters?
KROY is my baby. whatever i need to say or however i feel, that's what KROY is to me.
You studied music, particularly jazz music, do you think it influenced a lot of the music you make today?
I'm sure it did, but not in a "genre" way. Studying jazz to me was mostly studying music history as well as composition and arrangement. After i finished my degree i took a pretty long break from writing because i felt my work was tinted by my studies. It took a while before i could get back to the authenticity of writing with my gut and intuition. Although i know that a lot of the knowledge that i got from my studies helps me everyday.
You released your debut solo album and have been garnering buzz. What were your expectations for this debut album and do you feel like you’ve met your goals as a solo artist?
Absolutely. Releasing my first solo album was such a rush for me but i really did it for myself. just the fact that it was done and that it was mine was more than enough for me. So everything that came afterwards and people's reaction to it was just really a plus.
If you could describe your aura/vibe as KROY through a gif you found on tumblr, which one would it be? (link)
Do you feel like the absence of colour in your visuals has something to do with letting the music speak for itself?
Mmm I never thought of it that way. mostly it's because it helps me focus. When there's a lack of colour, i feel like you can concentrate on what's really going on in the picture / image.
What can we expect from KROY in the near future?
I have a few collaborations on the way. And i'll be touring for a little while. But you can also expect new videos some time soon <3
